Dog Liability Insurance (Hundehaftpflicht)

Dog Liability Insurance (Hundehaftpflicht)

Germany is incredibly dog-friendly. You can take your dog on the U-Bahn, into most restaurants, and even to some offices. However, this freedom comes with strict rules and liabilities.

Is It Mandatory?

In Germany, if your dog causes damage—whether they chew a landlord's doorframe or run into a bike lane and cause a cyclist to crash—you are personally liable for 100% of the costs. Standard private liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) covers small pets like cats and hamsters, but excludes dogs.

Therefore, you need a specific Hundehaftpflichtversicherung (Dog Liability Insurance). Depending on the state (Bundesland) you live in, this insurance isn't just a good idea; it is legally mandatory!

What Does it Cover?

A good policy covers personal injury (Personenschäden), property damage (Sachschäden), and financial loss (Vermögensschäden) caused by your dog up to millions of euros.

Crucially for expats, look for a policy that covers Mietsachschäden (rental property damage). If your dog scratches the expensive parquet floor in your rented Berlin apartment, the insurance will cover the repair costs when you move out.

How Much Does it Cost?

It is surprisingly affordable. For a standard, non-dangerous breed, a solid policy costs between €40 and €70 per year. It is a tiny price to pay for massive financial protection.
