Veterinary costs in Germany are strictly regulated by a government fee schedule called the GOT (Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte). In late 2022, the GOT was significantly updated, causing vet bills across the country to double or even triple for many standard procedures.
The Rising Costs of Vet Care
A simple check-up, an emergency weekend visit, or a minor surgery for a dog or cat can now easily run into the thousands of euros. Vets are legally required to charge at least the basic GOT rate, but they can charge up to 3x (or even 4x in emergencies) the basic rate for complex or after-hours work.
The Two Types of Pet Insurance
To protect themselves from sudden massive bills, many pet owners look into insurance (Tierkrankenversicherung). You generally have two choices:
1. Surgery-Only Insurance (OP-Schutz)
- What it is: Covers the high costs of surgical procedures (under general anesthesia) and the immediate aftercare.
- Cost: Quite affordable, usually between €10 and €25 per month depending on the pet's age and breed.
- Verdict: Highly recommended as a safety net against catastrophic events (like swallowing a toy or breaking a leg).
2. Full Health Insurance (Vollschutz)
- What it is: Covers surgeries PLUS regular vet visits, medications, diagnostics (bloodwork, X-rays), and sometimes even annual vaccinations.
- Cost: Expensive. Can range from €40 to over €100 per month.
- Verdict: Only worth it if you have a breed prone to chronic illnesses, or if you prefer the peace of mind of never worrying about a vet bill. Otherwise, putting €50 a month into a savings account might be mathematically smarter.
Important Things to Watch Out For
If you do buy pet insurance in Germany, read the fine print carefully:
- Waiting Periods (Wartezeit): Usually 1 to 3 months before coverage kicks in (accidents are often covered immediately).
- Annual Limits: Some cheap policies cap payouts at €1,000 per year, which won't help much in a real emergency. Look for unlimited or high limits.
- GOT Multiplier: Make sure the policy covers up to the 3-fold or 4-fold GOT rate, otherwise you will pay the difference out of pocket during a weekend emergency.
