The Anmeldung (registration) is the most critical bureaucratic step when you move to Germany. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, get a tax ID, or even sign an internet contract. It is the key that unlocks your life in Germany.
1. The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
This long word simply means "Landlord's Confirmation of Residence." You cannot just show up at the Bürgeramt (citizens' office) with a rental contract. You must bring this specific one-page form signed by your landlord (or the main tenant if you are subletting legally) confirming you actually moved in.
2. Getting an Appointment (Termin)
In big cities like Berlin or Munich, getting an appointment at the Bürgeramt can take months. Pro Tip: Most offices release canceled appointments online every morning between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM. Refresh the page vigorously!
3. What to Bring
- Your passport or national ID card.
- The signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
- The filled-out Anmeldeformular (Registration form).
- Marriage certificate (if applicable, translated into German).
4. The Result: Meldebescheinigung
At the end of your short appointment, the official will hand you a piece of paper called a Meldebescheinigung. Do not lose this! It is your official proof of address in Germany.
