The "Turning 30" Student Trap

The Turning 30 Student Trap

Studying in Germany is fantastic, largely because students under 30 enjoy heavily subsidized public health insurance. You pay around €120 - €130 per month for world-class, comprehensive coverage.

But when you blow out the candles on your 30th birthday cake, that discount evaporates overnight. Here is what happens and what you can do about it.

The End of the Student Tariff (KVdS)

The affordable student insurance (Krankenversicherung der Studenten) legally ends either when you finish your 14th semester of study or the semester in which you turn 30 years old.

Once this happens, your public insurance provider (like TK, AOK, Barmer) will automatically transition you to a "Voluntary Membership" (freiwillige Versicherung).

The Financial Shock

As a voluntary member, you are no longer subsidized. You must pay the minimum statutory contribution rate. This means your monthly premium will instantly jump from ~€130 to roughly €220 - €240 per month.

For a student living on a tight budget or a blocked account, an extra €100+ a month is a significant blow.

Your Options

  1. Swallow the Cost: If you can afford it, staying in the public system is the safest route, ensuring seamless coverage and an easy transition into a standard job after graduation.
  2. Switch to Private Student Insurance: Companies like Educare24 or Care Concept offer private health insurance specifically for students over 30. These can cost as little as €35 to €60 a month. However, be warned: this is considered "travel insurance" or partial coverage. It might fulfill visa requirements, but it covers very little beyond emergencies. If you get seriously ill, you could face massive bills.
  3. Get a Working Student Job (Werkstudent): If you find a Werkstudent job, you can earn up to a certain limit. While it doesn't give you the cheap student tariff back, having a regular income makes the €240 premium much more manageable.

Can You Extend the Discount?

In very rare, strict cases, you can apply for an extension of the cheap student rate beyond age 30. Valid reasons include:

If you think you qualify, you must submit proof to your insurance provider before your 30th birthday.
