Frequently asked questions about insurance in Germany

Find clear and precise answers to resolve your doubts about choosing and managing health insurance in Germany.

What is the main difference between Public and Private?

Public (GKV) cost depends on your salary, while Private (PKV) depends on your age and health status. Public covers families for free; Private charges per person.

Who is legally required to have insurance in Germany?

Every resident. Employees earning below €77,400 (2026 limit) must stay in Public. Freelancers and high-earners can choose to opt-out to Private.

How does my income affect the choice?

If you earn above the JAEG limit, Private may be cheaper and offer better care. If you are below, Public is mandatory and automatically deducted from your payslip.

What coverage do student plans offer?

They meet all legal requirements for the ‘Sperrkonto’ and visa, covering essential primary care, emergencies, and hospital stays at a reduced rate.
